Privacy and cookies
We collect as little personal data as we can: an email address if you ask for the newsletter, and the technical data any web server records. This notice explains exactly what, why and for how long.

Because the publisher is established in the European Union, we process personal data under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Estonian data protection law. Readers in Canada also have rights under Canadian privacy legislation, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA); where Canadian law gives you a stronger right, we honour it.
2. What we collect, and why
a. The Friday File (newsletter)
If you subscribe to The Friday File, we collect your email address and nothing else: no name, no postal address, no date of birth and no financial information. We also record when you subscribed and when you confirmed, which is the evidence of consent the law asks us to keep.
- Purpose: to send you the weekly newsletter you asked for.
- Legal basis: your consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)).
- Double opt-in: after you submit the form we send one email asking you to confirm. If you do not confirm, nothing further is sent and the address is deleted.
- Withdrawing consent: every issue has an unsubscribe link, and you can also write to the privacy address above. Withdrawal is free and takes effect immediately.
b. Server logs
Our web server automatically records technical information for each request: IP address, date and time, the page requested, the referring page, and browser and operating system identifiers.
- Purpose: delivering the site, diagnosing faults and protecting it against attacks and abuse.
- Legal basis: our legitimate interest in operating a secure, working website (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).
- Retention: kept for a short period for security and diagnostics, then deleted or aggregated.
c. Advertising and measurement
This site is promoted through paid advertising, and advertising platforms commonly offer a measurement tag that records that a visitor arrived from an advertisement.
Outbrain pixel. The Outbrain measurement pixel is active on noplanetbsummit.org. Outbrain is the advertising network we use to promote this site. The pixel loads on content pages (the front page, files, dossier pages, the about page and the newsletter page) as soon as the page opens, including before you make a choice in the cookie banner. It never loads on this notice, the imprint, the terms, the contact page or the confirmation page.
The pixel tells Outbrain that a page was viewed. In doing so Outbrain receives technical data such as your IP address, the address of the page, the referring page, browser and device information, the time of the visit and any Outbrain cookie identifiers. We use this to measure which advertisements bring readers to the site and to adjust our campaigns. Outbrain may process data outside Canada and the European Economic Area; its safeguards, and how to opt out of personalised advertising, are described in Outbrain’s privacy policy.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in measuring the performance of our advertising. You can object at any time by writing to privacy@noplanetbsummit.org and through Outbrain’s opt-out, and you can block the pixel with your browser settings or a content blocker; every file remains fully readable. No other advertising or analytics tag is active on this site.
We may receive aggregated campaign reports from advertising platforms, such as numbers of impressions and clicks. These do not identify individual readers to us.
d. Campaign parameters in links
When you arrive from an advertisement, the link may carry campaign parameters in its address, such as a campaign or click identifier. We keep these in your browser’s session storage during your visit so that a newsletter subscription can be attributed to the right campaign. They are discarded when you close the browser. We never place personal or sensitive data in web addresses.
3. Cookies and similar storage
| Item | Purpose | When | Kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consent choice (local storage) | Remembers your cookie choice so the banner does not reappear | When you choose an option | Until you clear site data |
| Campaign parameters (session storage) | Attributing a subscription to the campaign that brought you | If you arrive from an advertisement | Until the browser closes |
| Outbrain pixel (content pages) | Measuring which Outbrain advertisements bring readers here | When a content page opens | As stated by Outbrain |
You can delete all of this at any time in your browser’s settings for this site. Doing so brings back the cookie banner, so you can choose again.
4. Fonts, images and external content
All fonts, icons and images on this site are served from our own server. We do not load fonts, analytics, social-media widgets, comment systems or video players from third parties. The one exception is the Outbrain pixel described in section 2c, which on content pages sends your IP address and the technical data listed there to Outbrain. Links to official sources are ordinary links: nothing is requested from those sites unless you click.
5. Who we share data with
We do not sell personal data or share it for anyone else’s marketing. Your email address is disclosed only to:
- our email delivery provider, acting as a processor under a data processing agreement, solely to send the newsletter;
- our hosting provider, which processes server log data as a processor;
- a public authority, where the law requires us to disclose it.
Where a processor is outside the European Economic Area, the transfer relies on an adequacy decision or the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.
6. How long we keep data
- Newsletter address: until you unsubscribe; afterwards only a minimal suppression record, so that we do not email you again by mistake.
- Unconfirmed subscriptions: deleted shortly after the confirmation period ends.
- Server logs: a short period for security and diagnostics.
- Correspondence: as long as needed to deal with your message and any follow-up.
7. Your rights
You have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you and receive a copy; to have inaccurate data corrected; to have your data deleted; to restrict or object to processing; to receive your data in a portable format; and to withdraw consent at any time, without giving a reason and at no cost. Write to privacy@noplanetbsummit.org. We respond within one month.
8. Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you may complain to a supervisory authority:
- Estonia (our lead authority): Andmekaitse Inspektsioon (Estonian Data Protection Inspectorate), Tatari 39, 10134 Tallinn, Estonia · www.aki.ee
- Canada: the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada · www.priv.gc.ca
- Elsewhere in the European Economic Area: the supervisory authority in your country of residence.
9. Children
This site is written for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
10. A note on security
We will never ask you, by email, telephone or on this website, for a Social Insurance Number, bank account details, card number or government account password. No part of this site needs them, and anyone asking for them in our name is not acting for us. Please report such requests to privacy@noplanetbsummit.org.
11. Changes to this notice
If we change how we handle personal data, including activating a measurement tag or changing when it loads, we will update this notice and its date before the change takes effect.
